Rooted in Documented Finnish Folklore
For thousands of years, the peoples of Finland have lived with the forest, not beside it, but within it. Every tree had a spirit, every animal a message, every season its rituals. Each of the 49 cards carries an element, animal, tree, plant or forest spirit from that tradition, along with a simple ritual for reflection and reconnecting with nature.
The book included with the deck isn’t a typical interpretation guide. Its content is based on documented Finnish folklore held in the archives of the Finnish Literature Society (SKS), Finland’s national literary and folklore archive — the same archive that holds the source manuscripts of the Kalevala, Finland’s national epic, which SKS published in 1835. Each of the 49 cards comes with its own extended chapter tracing that element in Finnish folklore and history. It is more than a deck, it is a mythology book and deck combined.
SKS has also published Reetta Ranta’s earlier Finnish books: The Soul Birds, Sacred Trees and Timeless Nordic Rituals. She is known in Finland from the TV series Back to Nature Finland and her long-standing work documenting Finnish folk tradition. Her books are published internationally, in the US through REDFeather (an imprint of Schiffer Publishing), in Germany by Goldmann (Penguin Random House), and in the Netherlands by Meulenhoff, publishing De roep van de kraanvogel (Sould Birds) in November 2026.

The Making of the Illustrations
Our illustrations are inspired by the spirit of Finland’s Golden Age of Art and mythology. The visual world draws from artists like Akseli Gallen-Kallela, the epic stories of Kalevala, and the refined aesthetics of Japanese woodblock prints.
The color images were crafted using a combination of Midjourney generative AI, Photoshop’s creative tools, and hand-drawn illustrations. Each illustration is the result of a creative dialogue between the artist and technology, guided by human imagination and storytelling.
Our aim is to bring Finnish folklore and nature’s wisdom into modern life: to make the ancient visible, beautiful, and accessible.
Made by Two Sisters in Finland
Reetta Ranta (MA, Aalto University) is a published author, storyteller, and executive coach. She authored all stories and rituals in this deck, drawing on research, Finnish folklore archives held by the Finnish Literature Society, as well as her own creative storytelling and intuition. All texts, stories, and rituals in this deck were written by Reetta Ranta and are grounded in authentic archival sources.
Riikka Haro (MA, Aalto University) is a graphic designer with a passion for Finnish cultural heritage and craft traditions. She designed the deck’s visual world, inspired by late 19th-century Nordic romanticism. The illustrations were created using a combination of digital painting, hand-drawn elements and AI-assisted tools, then refined card by card.
We are two sisters, a visionary writer and a creative designer, born in Eastern Finland to a family of varied backgrounds – a mix of nomad spirited artistic father and a language teacher mother ever interested in learning new things. We were brought up with stories about small creatures, nature spirits and gnomes in Finnish nature, a mystical world painted by our father, whereas our mother set up an example of the importance of languages and expanding your world view by meeting people and how reading opens the way to new ideas and skills. With this heritage we create stories and products that draw their inspiration from Finnish nature, mythology and folktales.
Together the sisters run Power Animals United, their family owned company in Finland.
